For those who have ever wondered how the finished SMiLE album might have been assembled, here is one (of many) that belongs at the top of the list. Of course, it's impossile to second guess Brian Wilson but this comes close. The sound quality throughout is A+. The usual SMiLE fare is represented here mostly in stereo. Also included are versions of "BARNYARD" (the real one), "HE GIVES SPEECHES", "LOOK", "I WANT TO BE AROUND"/"FRIDAY NIGHT" , "FIRE" ("Mrs. O'Leary's Cow").....

Brian Wilson -" PIECES OF SMILE"
1. "My Little Red Book" 2. "Sail Plane Song" 3. "Mona Kani" 4. "Tones" (take 4 featuring Carl) 5. "Piano Instrumental" 6. "Laughter" 7. "Vegetables" (demo) 8. "Water Sessions" 9. "Wonderful" (Smiley) 10. "Crow Vocal" 11. "Squeaky Worms" 12. "Wonderful" (piano) 13. "Wonderful" (Smiley Pt.II) 14. "Been Way Too Long"

The title is somewhat mis-leading as not all of cuts on this CD are from the SMiLE era. If you "listen through" the lousy sound quality (the "clicks and pops" suggest that most of this disc was transfered from an acetate) there are some interesting things on this disc. "My Little Red Book" (the Bacharach/David tune) features Brian at the piano demonstratng this odd little number in a quazi lounge singer voice. It is in a word: hilarious. "Sail Plane Song" an early version featuring BW on lead. "Mona Kani" and "Tones Take 4" are both rather elaborate backing tracks (with strings). "Piano Instrumental" features a spanish guitar, organ... and no piano. Most notable on this disc is an early demo of "Vegetables". "Crow Sessions" is from the fade to "Cabinessence". "Squeaky Worms" from the tracking sessions for "Do You Like Worms". "Been Way Too Long" is an alternative version with an added set of backing vocals.

"SMiLE" Sessions Vol. 1 & 2 and "MONO MIXES" are sets for the completest. The sets are referred to as "upgraded" because they are UNEDITED 1st generation transfers. No noise reduction was used.. so this is about as close as one can get to hearing the original masters in their original (dry mixed) state. A good amount of material here is also available on SOT's Vol. 17 and elsewhere, but in edited form. And yes, there are a few snippets which are only available here (as far as I know).
